14. 10월 14일(금) ‘탐욕은 결국 멸망의 선봉이다’ 창 34:18-31

본문 관찰과 묵상

하몰이 아들 세겜과 성읍 모든 남성이 할례를 받게 하였다. 3일째 되는날 시므온과 레위가 칼을 가지고 성읍을 습격하여 모든 남자를 죽였다. 디나를 집으로 데려왔다. 야곱의 모든 아들들이 성읍을 노략하고 그들의 아내들과 자녀들과 재물과 가축을 탈취하였다.

QT를 통하여 듣는 주님의 음성

디나를 강간하고 아내를 삼고 야곱의 재산까지 가지려는 탐욕이 세겜 자신은 물론 가족과 온 성읍의 멸망을 불러왔다. 야곱 아들들의 복수의 탐욕이 죄 없는 한 성읍민 전체를 죽였다. 그 성읍의 모든 재물과 사람과 가축까지 탈취한 탐욕은 야곱과 아들들의 미래의 삶에 어두운 그림자를 들였다.

결단과 적용

야곱은 시므온과 레위가 가나안과 브리스족속에게 악취를 내게 하였다고 꾸짖었다. 야곱은 자신가족이 수가 적어 늘 불안에 떨었고 어떻게 하든지 그 세겜땅에 잘 정착하기를 원하였다. 그러나 그것은 본래 하나님의 뜻이 아니었다. 야곱은 가서 정착할 곳이 벧엘이었다. 이 사건으로 하나님은 합력하여 선을 이루셨다.

Observation and meditation on the text

Hamor had all the males as well as Shechem in his city circumcised. Three days later Simeon and Levi took their sword and attacked the city. They killed all the males in the city while they were still in pains. They took Dina back home. All the sons of Jacob plundered the city and took their wives and children as well as all their wealth and livestock.

I hear the voice of the Lord through QT

Shechem’s covetousness which caused him to rape Dina and his planning to take Jacob’s wealth resulted in the destruction of himself, his household and the entire people in the city. Likewise, the covetousness of revenge of the sons of Jacob resulted also in the destruction of the entire citizens. Their covetousness which mercilessly looted the entire city brought the dark shadow on Jacob’s future.

Decisions and applications

Jacob vehemently rebuked Simeon and Levi that they brought trouble on him by making him obnoxious to the native people such as Canaanites and Perizzites. Jacob was always felt insecurity due to a few in number of his family. Therefore, he always tried not to bring about any trouble against them to settle down there well. However, it was not God’s will for Jacob. God wanted him to go to Bethel. By this awful and disastrous event, God worked for the good to Jacob whom God had called according to God’s purpose.
